EDUC 638 - Introduction

My name is Geoffrey Hampson and I currently reside in Dallas, Texas. I am pursuing a doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction with hopes of finishing within the next 1.5 years.  I currently teach physical education at the elementary level (K-5) in the downtown area of Dallas. I teach in a classroom setting at a charter school, which is challenging, but definitely gets me to be creative with my teaching strategies. I enjoy working out, drinking coffee, the outdoors with friends, traveling, karaoke, and line dancing.

From this course, I want to enhance my knowledge and understanding of best practices for technology use. As technology advances, educators must improve their teaching strategies to use innovative techniques that increase student engagement levels and academic achievements.

Because I want to teach at the university level, I find technology extremely important for understanding best methods that interest adults as well. It's essential that professors meets the needs of college students, especially those students whom are taking online courses. Technology is a major area of growth for educators. PowerPoints are my extreme pet peeve. Educators love to use them; however, most fail to properly implement their uses correctly in trainings and in classrooms.

  1. Thanks for sharing your introduction. I ,too, live in Texas near San Antonio and by two sons also live in Dallas where they are involved in technology with Dell and Verizon. I am trying to learn as much as possible to aid disadvantaged students in Africa and Asia. I would like to hear more about your charter school and in what it specializes, I worked for years in public schools in Illinois and Texas. Does your charter school enable you to design curriculum? Thanks, and I hope we meet some time and you can share more of your experiences.

  2. Verne,

My charter network, Uplift Education, is very new and growing; therefore, the curriculum is constantly changing and developing. The Deans and Directors are always open to constant changes to our curriculum that meets our students' needs and benefits them for readiness and preparation for college. My particular elementary school is a science school that partners with the Perot Museum. We have a representative from Perot who works with our teachers and implements lessons as well in our classrooms. Our students are continually going on field trips across the street to the Perot to learn as much as they can about science, nature, and wildlife. My charter is extremely effective at listening to its teachers and team members to ensure best practices and effective curriculum and instructional approaches to advance learning in the classroom.

  3. Hi, Geoffrey! Thank you for your service to our country. It sounds like you certainly have challenges that keep your classroom / physical education instruction interesting! I agree--technology can be very helpful when working to engage children. Other than a SmartBoard, in what other ways do you use technology with your students?
